Description
🎮 PC & XBOX Ally X / Ally X Edition – 1TB RetroBat Setup Service
Digital Download or Mail-In Service — your choice at checkout.
This listing is for a RetroBat-based setup and configuration service. You may choose an instant digital delivery of the configured build, or mail in your own microSD card / SSD and have it returned fully configured.
🕹️ Why This Build
Everyone in the forums and on Discord keeps asking the same thing: what’s the next best thing? A lot of people balk at the Raspberry Pi and its cost now (then again — everything is insane cost-wise). The XBOX Ally X (yes, it’s now XBOX) has quickly become my favorite handheld of all time, other than the Atari Lynx.
If you have an Ally X or XBOX Ally X, you can throw most PC games at it without a problem, especially anything optimized for it. Forza Horizon 6 runs near 60 FPS at 120Hz with settings on high — that’s unheard of for most laptops alone.
So what was missing? The past. 😊 Work on this build started late Summer 2025 / early Fall on desktop, and it’s been refined ever since.
📦 What’s In The Build
- Well over 28,000 games across arcade, retro and disc-based libraries
- Complete MAME and FBNeo arcade libraries, plus TeknoParrot “best of” modern arcade
- PSX through Switch era modern consoles — personal favorites and publicly ranked “best of” lists
- PC ports section — Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D with hi-res graphics and sound packs
- DOS and classic PC libraries, most fully controller-playable
- Daphne laserdisc classics
- Future Pinball (with BAM / FizX physics) and Visual Pinball X — both controller and keyboard playable
- VSmile and Tiger handheld categories for the little ones 😊
- ~5,000 RetroAchievements-ready games pre-scraped in their own category
- Custom-created media where scraping wasn’t available (mostly the pinball area)
Most games run with a controller (XBOX controller preferred). Some PC-based platforms will want a keyboard, but the vast majority — including the PC ports section — are fully controller-driven.
🗂️ Full Game Library — What’s Actually On The Drive
No vague “28,000+” hand-waving — here is the exact system-by-system breakdown of the 1TB build: 29,008 games across 123 systems, every one scraped with box art and verified booting in RetroBat before dispatch.

🎱 A Word On Pinball
Pinball was my gateway to video games (Space Invaders when it dropped — and boy, did it). With eight real pinball machines and a handful of arcade cabs in the collection, Visual Pinball X is about as close to the real thing as a virtual cab gets.
Future Pinball is a different kind of great — it integrates movie and TV clips right into the tables, and physics keep improving thanks to the community (huge props to Terry Red for carrying the torch with his FizX work). Masters of the Universe Collector’s Edition and Aliens: Game Over, Man Edition alone should be real machines — they’re on here.
If you have a second monitor, setting up PinUp Popper gives you a real backbox experience like a modern Stern or Jersey Jack. VPForums and VPUniverse make PuPVideo packs that are relatively easy to set up. This image is kept mostly simple by default so you can decide.
💾 Storage & Capacity — Read This First
- The image is roughly 950GB, leaving room for save files.
- You need a quality/premium 1TB microSD or SSD — SanDisk Extreme, higher-end Samsung EVO, etc. These provision at roughly 953GB.
- Cheaper cards and drives often only provision 931GB — which is not enough. Verify before buying. You genuinely get what you pay for with modern cards and drives.
🚚 Delivery Options (Choose One At Checkout)
🔹 Digital Download — download links are provided after purchase. You supply your own 1TB microSD / SSD and copy the build over following the included guide.
🔹 Mail-In Service — purchase this service, ship your microSD card or SSD to the address provided after checkout, and we configure and return it. Setup time is typically 3–6 business days after your device is received. Service cannot begin until your storage device arrives.
🛠️ Installation — The RTFM Section
- Unpackage the main build folder to the root of your Windows C: drive (or whichever drive you’re using). Some platforms depend on this — Daphne in particular.
- Install everything in the INSTALL FIRST folder that accompanies the image. Reboot and check Windows Update afterwards. Note: three copies of the same Visual Basic all-in-one prerequisite were included by accident — you only need to install one, once. Right-click each file → Properties → Unblock before installing.
- The RetroBat wiki is full of great info if you hit any issues.
- Add the drive or folder to your antivirus exemption list. Scanners can block or drag down parts of the build. No false positives were seen running Malwarebytes and Windows Defender together, but it’s worth doing up front.
- Something won’t launch? Hold A (or X on a PlayStation controller), go to Advanced Properties and change the emulator. That’s typically the fix — assuming the prerequisites are installed. Most of this has been weeded out per-game, but nobody’s perfect. 😉
- Go to Emulators → fpinball → BAM, right-click FPLoader.exe and Run as Administrator once. This gives the executable a solid path. You may get one-time pop-ups for library access for both Future Pinball and Visual Pinball. If tables still won’t load, delete the contents of the vpinball and fpinball folders under Emulators (don’t delete the folders themselves) and RetroBat will reinstall and set them up for you over a network connection.
- Some PC platforms expect keyboard input even though controllers work — BBC Micro, Sinclair, Tandy CoCo among others.
- Light guns should work plugged in from the jump (Sinden in particular). You may still want to remap buttons per game — hold down on a game in RetroBat and go into gun / control configuration.
- RetroAchievements fan? About 5,000 games are scraped and achievement-ready in their own category. Enable your RetroAchievements account under Game Options and you’re rolling.
- Netplay is under Game Options too. Once enabled, hit Y (or Triangle) from the top menu of a system to play compatible games with others. Pick a node near you — distance means lag.
- Scrapers are built in. Make a ScreenScraper account and add it for mass scraping when you add games. Donors get more threads, which makes it much faster.
🔧 Troubleshooting (Handheld / AMD & Intel Graphics)
- Newer systems running slow on handheld (e.g. PS3): Start → Game Settings → Per Advanced System Configuration → PlayStation 3 → Drivers → set Video to Vulkan instead of Auto.
- TeknoParrot not filling the screen on Ally X / Steam Deck: Start → Game Settings → Per Advanced System Configuration → TeknoParrot → Video → set Fullscreen Mode to Fullscreen Window and turn Use Screen Resolution from Auto to fully enabled. Desktops are fine as-is.
- TeknoParrot controls not responding: go to Emulators → TeknoParrot → TeknoParrotUI.exe and change each game from XInput to MergedInput. No other control changes needed. RetroBat hasn’t exposed this in its GUI yet.
- Rambo and Outrun 2 texture issues on AMD hardware (the Ally X is AMD; NVIDIA desktops don’t show this): patch files and copy paths are included with your purchase.
- Rambo fix path:
/roms/teknoparrot/Rambo.parrot/disk0/fs— copy folders here and overwrite when prompted - Outrun 2 fix path:
/roms/teknoparrot/or2spdlx.parrot/Jennifer— copy folder here and overwrite when prompted
- Rambo fix path:
- Visual Pinball ROM update pack for a couple of tables (SMB and World Poker / Joker Tour) is included — dump the contents into the main folder and overwrite if asked.
🎯 Future Pinball Controller Setup (Ally X Specific)
The Ally X uses an ASUS-based controller driver rather than the standard Microsoft Xbox driver, so the autoconfig profile doesn’t take for Future Pinball. Visual Pinball is unaffected.
- Windows → Settings → System → Advanced Options → turn on Developer Mode.
- Go to Emulators → fpinball → BAM → FPLoader.exe.
- Preferences → Game Keys and Controls.
- Enable Mouse/Joypad Controllers and set the dropdown to ROG Xbox Ally Device Gamepad (2).
- Set controls as follows:
- Left Flipper — Button 5 (Y)
- Right Flipper — Button 6 (Z)
- Insert Coin 1 — Button 7 (L)
- Start Game — Button 8 (R)
- Special 1 — Button 3 (C)
- Special 2 — Button 2 (B)
- Exit Table — Button 11 (Back and Start will exit in RetroBat anyway)
- Digital Plunge — Button 1 (A)
- Pause — Button 10
- Change Camera — Button 4 (X)
- Toggle HUD — Button 13
Click Set as Defaults, then OK.
